Incentive grants from Norway 2025: Seven Productions Granted funds

Features

The Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) is offering a total reimbursement framework of NOK 66,825,000 from the incentive scheme for the production and post-production of seven film and series productions in Norway.

During a  meeting at the Norwegian Film Institute, which administers the Norwegian incentive scheme, it was decided to offer a reimbursement through Norway`s incentive scheme to three feature films and four drama series. These productions plan to spend nearly NOK 270 million in Norway.

Originally, the entire 2025 incentive framework was allocated to the international drama series Secret Garden. However, since this production has declined the offer, the funds are now being allocated to other applicants from the same application round.

Among the projects now receiving a reimbursement framework are productions directed by André Øvredal and French filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve.

“It is with great pleasure that we can now offer reimbursement for seven film and series productions in Norway. This will create production activity for a long time and across many regions of the country, generating jobs, experience, and expertise for Norwegian film professionals. We look forward to seeing all these productions on screens in the coming years,” says Kjersti Mo, CEO of the Norwegian Film Institute.

Productions Offered a Reimbursement in 2025

Mile Zero

  • Format: Feature film
  • Norwegian Producer: Standard Film Produksjon
  • Reimbursement Framework: NOK 32,925,000
  • Director: André Øvredal

Mile Zero is an American thriller, in English, featuring American actors. However, all other contributors will be Norwegian. The story is set on an oil rig in Alaska, but the film will be entirely produced in Norway. We want to demonstrate that Norway has reached such a high professional level that we can make a ‘Hollywood film’ just as well as they can in Hollywood. In this way, the incentive scheme will have helped elevate the Norwegian film industry,” says producer John M. Jacobsen, who explains that director André Øvredal brought the project to him.

“André and I previously worked together on Trollhunter, which was a major international success, and we hope to replicate that success,” says Jacobsen.

Mord i Sogn (Working Title)

  • Format: Drama series
  • Norwegian Producer: Nordisk Film Production
  • Reimbursement Framework: NOK 10,725,000

Mord i Sogn is a modern crime series set in the Sognefjord region. The series is planned for multiple seasons, based on Jørgen Jæger’s literary universe, and written by Kathrine Valen Zeiner and Kristoffer Metcalfe.

“With funding from the incentive scheme, we can greenlight the project and begin production this year, creating the series entirely in Norway. The production industry is currently rather quiet, so it feels incredibly rewarding to contribute to Norwegian actors, crew, and suppliers being able to create the first of what we hope will be many seasons of Mord i Sogn,” says Sigurd Mikal Karoliussen, producer at Nordisk Film Production.

Filming begins this fall, with the series set to premiere in spring 2026 on TV 2 and several European TV channels.

“Storm Studios has contributed visual effects to the Star Trek universe for several years, and we look forward to continuing this journey with a new season of Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, as well as providing VFX for other exciting projects receiving incentives. These incentives make both Storm Studios and Norway an attractive destination for post-production while fostering growth and expertise in the Norwegian VFX industry,” says Thomas Reppen, Managing Director and Producer at Storm Studios.

If Love Should Die

  • Format: Feature film
  • Norwegian Producer: Mer Film
  • Reimbursement Framework: NOK 5,075,000
  • Director: Mia Hansen-Løve

Mer Film AS, with producer Maria Ekerhovd, is co-producing If Love Should Die, directed by Mia Hansen-Løve. The film explores the life of Mary Wollstonecraft—her intellectual journeys, ideas, relationships, and dramatic personal experiences.

Some of the filming and post-production will take place in Norway, employing a Norwegian crew in several key positions.

“It is a dream to collaborate with Mia Hansen-Løve, one of the world’s leading directors,” says producer Maria Ekerhovd of Mer Film.

About the Incentive Scheme

The Film and Series Production Incentive Scheme was introduced on January 1, 2016. It offers reimbursement of up to 25% for productions made entirely or partially in Norway. The scheme is designed to attract major international productions to the country.

Reimbursement is calculated based on documented production costs incurred in Norway and is only paid out after the production is completed. The incentive scheme secures foreign investments in Norway, injecting fresh capital that stimulates increased activity in the Norwegian economy, both within and outside the film industry.

Prioritization of Applications

During the evaluation process, qualified applications are ranked according to specific assessment criteria that align with the scheme’s objectives. Prioritization is based on:

  • Total production budget
  • Budget allocated to production in Norway
  • International distribution potential
  • Proportion of private funding
  • Proportion of international financing
  • Impact on the Norwegian film industry

Projects that qualify for the scheme are offered a reimbursement framework according to their ranking, as long as the budget for the application round allows.
